“Visual Function: An Introduction to Information Design” by Paul Mijksenaar

Visual Function is a lively overview of the emerging field of information design and its impact on the world around us. Paul Mijksenaar, professor at Delft University of Technology, provides an opinionated survey of a variety of disciplines including graphic design, mapmaking, industrial design, and architecture, in this plea for clarity and good sense in the design of the products we encounter in everyday life. Mijksenaar analyzes numerous illustrations of the best and worst in design throughout history, from the Titanic to the Bauhaus to the Swatch, and proposes methodes for today’s designers to discover their own creative solutions to the challenges of transmitting information.
Design: A Very Short Introduction

John Heskett wants to transform the way we think about design by showing how integral it is to our daily lives, from the spoon we use to eat our breakfast cereal, and the car we drive to work in, to the medical equipment used to save lives. Design combines ‘need’ and ‘desire’ in the form of a practical object that can also reflect the user’s identity and aspirations through its form and decoration. This concise guide to contemporary design goes beyond style and taste to look at how different cultures and individuals personalize objects. Heskett also reveals how simple objects, such as a toothpick, can have their design modified to suit the specific cultural behaviour in different countries. There are also fascinating insights into how major companies such as Nokia, Ford, and Sony approach design. Finally, the author gives us an exciting vision of what design can offer us in the future, showing in particular how it can humanize new technology.

Packaging is an important factor in any retail environment and a *** element in most marketing strategies. Consumers react immediately to package shapes, and are influenced by them when making buying decisions. Different product categories are often easy to recognize by their characteristic form, for example chocolate boxes or milk cartons. On the other hand, a manufacturer of an exclusive product, such as jewellery or perfume, may deliberately choose an unusual, eye-catching form.
Those books are unique step-by-step manuals, containing hundreds of great folding ideas and ready-to-use designs. These books are essential tools for anyone involved in the fields of graphic and industrial design, advertising, and printing. All patterns are stored in eps vector format on the enclosed CD-ROMs. They may be used freely to create new designs, and can be scaled and modified to suit any conceivable purpose.
